The Provincial Government of Aklan through the Provincial Planning and Development Office and the Aklan Gender and Development Commission chaired by Gov. Florencio T. Miraflores organized the first Gender Sensitive Media Orientation as part of its 18 Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women held at the Governor’s Conference Room, Provincial Governor’s Office, Capitol Site Kalibo, Aklan last November 24, 2017.
The program proper began with the registration and opening ceremonies. Mr. Joselito Ramos of Philippine Information Agency-Aklan introduced the participants. The morning session then proceeded to the lecture of Commissioner Cristita Triunfante of the Philippine Commission of Women. The talk consists of an introduction to gender and the media and the role of media standards on gender fairness.
Lecture sessions by Commissioner Triunfante resumed on the afternoon. Gender stereotyping and topics on language such as sexism and marginalization of women were discussed.
The event ended after Ms. Maranatha Vargas of the Provincial Planning and Development Office tested and evaluated what the participants learned.
Participants that comprised of teachers and mass communication students including media practitioners actively engaged with the speaker. Topics were thoroughly deliberated by both participants and the speaker. Furthermore, experiences and practices of the participants particularly on the use of language in media were shared.
Commissioner Triunfante also commended Aklan for its best practices in Gender and Development and for its continuous campaign to end Violence Against Women. #VAWfreePH #VAWfreeAKLAN
