ONE BILLION RISING:  Rise for Revolution in Aklan

Provincial Government of Aklan thru the Aklan GAD Comission

Provincial Planning and Development Office-ENGR. ROGER M. ESTO

Provincial Government of Aklan: On February 14, 2015, at 3PM, Aklan Province joined with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.

One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history.  The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.  On 14 February 2013, people across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.  Last year, on 14 February 2014, One Billion Rising for Justice focused on the issue of justice for all survivors of gender violence, and highlighted the impunity that lives at the intersection of poverty, racism, war, the plunder of the environment, capitalism, imperialism, and patriarchy. Events took place in 200 countries, where women, men, and youth came together to Rise, Release, and Dance outside of court houses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes, or simply public gathering places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not.

This year in 2015, we are rising for Revolution.

For two consecutive years since 2013, we have risen, and danced to show the people in Aklan, especially those victims of gender based violence and discrimination, shown our political leaders and service providers that in Aklan – we do not tolerate VIOLENCE.

One Billion Rising is a promise that we will rise up with women and men worldwide to say, “Enough! The violence ends now.”

According to the report given by the Aklan Provincial Police Office – Women and Children’s Protection Desk last January 22, 2014, we have a total of 841 Recorded and Filed cases on Crimes committed against women for year 2014, a higher number than 582 cases in 2013. With this increasing trend of reported violence, we do not want to assume that there are more unreported cases. Thus, the Province of Aklan thru the Aklan Gender and Development Commission together with all NGA and CSO partners take a strong stand in preventing if not totally eradicating Violence Against Women and their Children cases, and in the process urging more women victims of abuse to speak out, seek for help and avail of the Government’s services.

One Billion Rising: Rise for Revolution in Aklan is also a promise of the Provincial Government of Aklan thru the Aklan GAD Commission and the leadership of Governor Florencio T. Miraflores that we will continuously rise up with women and men worldwide in saying that Violence Ends Now.
